The unarmed aircraft was carrying a crew of three men from the Air Force and five from the National Defence Radio Establishment on a classified but lawful and routine radio and radar reconnaissance mission over Swedish and international waters when it was shot down on 1952-06-13 at 11:28 CET by a Soviet MiG-15bis fighter jet, piloted by Captain Grigory Osinsky from Tukums air base in Soviet-occupied Latvia under orders from Colonel Fyodor Shinkarenko. A Catalina (Tp 47) search and rescue aircraft sent to look for the DC-3 was also shot down over international waters by Soviet aircraft three days later. No survivors from the DC-3 were found. The Soviet Union officially denied involvement until its dissolution in 1991. The events are known as the Catalina affair. The DC-3 wreckage was found on 2003-06-10 at a depth of 125 meters. The fuselage was salvaged on 2004-03-19 and taken to Muskö naval base for examination and preservation. The remains of four crewmen were identified. Det obeväpnade flygplanet hade en besättning på tre man från flygvapnet och fem från FRA och genomförde ett hemligstämplat men lagligt och rutinmässigt radio- och radarspaningsuppdrag över svenskt och internationellt vatten när det sköts ner 1952-06-13 klockan 11.28 CET av ett sovjetiskt jaktflygplan av typen MiG-15bis som flögs av kapten Grigorij Osinskij från Tukums flygbas i Sovjetockuperade Lettland på order från överste Fjodor Sjinkarenko. Ett sjöräddningsflygplan av typen Catalina (Tp 47) som sökte efter DC-3:an sköts också ner över internationellt vatten av sovjetiskt flyg tre dagar senare. Inga överlevare från DC-3:an hittades. Sovjetunionen förnekade officiellt inblandning fram till dess upplösning 1991. Händelserna är kända som Catalinaaffären. Vraket av DC-3:an hittades 2003-06-10 på ett djup av 125 meter. Flygkroppen bärgades 2004-03-19 och togs till Musköbasen för att undersökas och konserveras. Kvarlevorna av fyra besättningsmän identifierades.
