DescriptionNaval Sea Systems Command Building - Washington Navy Yard shooting - 2013-09-17.jpg
English: Looking northwest at the Naval Sea Systems Command Building at the Washington Navy Yard -- the day after the Washington Navy Yard shootings on September 16, 2013, in Washington, D.C., in the United States.
Constructed during 1939-1940, Building 197 was originally called the "Gun Assembly Shop" and was used for ordnance assembly during World War II. It is a striking examples of industrial architecture constructed for use during the war effort, and is part of the Washington Navy Yard National Historic Landmark. It was renovated in 2001 as part of a $200 million construction project involving several buildings at the Washington Navy Yard.
The Naval Sea Systems Command relocated here in 1995 from Crystal City, Virginia, as part of the Base Realignment and Closure process. The command subsequently built three massive new office buildings in the area (most of them outside the Washington Navy Yard), revitalizing the area. The Naval Sea Systems Command employs about 6,000 people at the Washington Navy Yard and its environs.
